Above all, a H.I.T. Coach is a positive role model for his players, parents, and those around him. You pledge to:
Make sports a positive experience. Measure success not in terms of outcomes but in how each player improves as an athlete and grows as a young man or woman.
Be prepared. Help your players be mentally, emotionally, and physically ready to give their best effort.
Be a role model. Focus on what you can control, starting with your own attitude and behavior. No swearing, outbursts, or personal criticism. Be organized and learn your league’s rules and bylaws. If you’re having fun, your kids will be, too.
Be responsible to your players. Whether you win or lose doesn’t reflect your ability as a coach. Here’s what does: your team’s ability to demonstrate respect, humility, discipline, and a winning attitude.
Be there off the field. Let your players know you’re there for them off the field. Ask about school, family, and activities beyond sports.
Be vocal. It’s OK to be loud. But never with a hint of anger at the athlete personally.
Be responsible to your players’ parents. Communicate your expectations about games, practices, punctuality, and being equipped to play. Appreciate the parents’ time, energy, and financial commitment involved with sports.
Smile. A lot. It’s contagious.
